Apple cut 200+ jobs on Vision Pro and Siri days before the Mac mini AI push

Bloomberg says Apple eliminated more than 200 roles across Vision Pro gaming, Immersive Video, Siri, and Intelligent Systems Experience as Siri AI and smart glasses take priority. Vision Pro stays, but the org chart is shifting fast.

Apple cut 200+ jobs on Vision Pro and Siri days before the Mac mini AI push

Apple's fall 2026 hardware season opened with a shiny Mac mini pitch for always-on agentic computing. One week earlier, Bloomberg reported Apple had cut more than 200 jobs across Vision Pro, Siri, and software engineering.

Same company, same quarter: market the AI desktop, shrink the teams that were supposed to make spatial computing and the old Siri feel magical.

What Bloomberg says changed

9to5Mac summarized Bloomberg's reporting:

AreaApprox. cutsDirection
Vision Pro~100Largely shut down in-house gaming team; scaled back Immersive Video production
Siri + software~100Reorg tied to Siri AI architecture and Intelligent Systems Experience realignment
Intelligent Systems Experiencepart of aboveRestructure as AI features spread across apps

Apple's spokesperson framed it as evolving the business to deliver the best user experiences, with new roles created alongside impacted positions.

Vision Pro is not being canceled. Employees were told visionOS continues. Near term, Apple is prioritizing smart glasses that would not support immersive video or heavy gaming. A new Vision Pro model could still arrive around late 2028, per Bloomberg.

Siri AI is the through-line

The Siri cuts are not a retreat from assistants. They are a platform swap.

Apple's August Mac mini announcement tied hardware to macOS 27, Siri AI, and Apple Intelligence features rolling out this fall. Siri AI is supposed to use personal context across messages, mail, and photos, act across apps, and support Visual Intelligence on what is on screen.

Bloomberg's layoff story says the old Siri team's skill mix no longer matches the rebuilt stack. Apple eliminated some roles, reallocated resources, and opened new ones aligned with Siri AI.

That pattern is familiar in big tech AI pivots: the model changes faster than headcount plans. Teams built for scripted intents and server-side orchestration do not automatically map to on-device LLM routing, tool use, and safety review at Apple scale.

For third-party developers, the risk is API churn. For Apple employees, the risk is whiplash. For users, the risk is another year where demo videos look better than daily reliability.

Vision Pro: hobbyist halo, not agent hub

The Vision Pro cuts are more honest than the keynote rhetoric.

Immersive gaming and in-house Immersive Video were expensive bets on a device with a narrow install base. Shutting the gaming team and trimming video production says Apple is done pretending every studio will adopt spatial workflows this cycle.

Meanwhile the Mac mini became Apple's explicit agentic computing desktop. That is where developers who automate real work (inbox agents, local models, coding harnesses) already spend money. Vision Pro never became the default host for always-on agents: battery, form factor, and permissions all fight you.

I do not read these layoffs as "AR is dead." I read them as portfolio management before John Ternus takes the CEO role and before smart glasses ship. Glasses are a lower-weight bet with clearer daily-use cases. Vision Pro becomes a pro niche until a cheaper revision justifies another push.

Intelligent Systems Experience and the AI sprawl problem

Bloomberg also flagged cuts in Apple's Intelligent Systems Experience group. The stated goal is to realign teams as more groups ship AI features inside apps, services, and system UI.

That is the hard part of shipping AI inside a platform OS: every app team wants an LLM button, but centralized teams own safety, latency, and consistent UX. Reorgs here usually mean Apple is trying to stop fifty slightly different "AI summaries" from fragmenting user trust.

If you build Mac or iOS agents that depend on Apple Intelligence hooks, watch entitlement changes in the macOS 27 beta. Centralization can mean fewer surface APIs short term, even if the consumer story sounds more unified.

How this pairs with the Mac mini launch

Read the two headlines together:

  1. Cut Vision Pro content factories and legacy Siri roles.
  2. Ship M6/M5 Pro Mac minis marketed for always-on agent workloads and clusterable local models.

Apple is aligning spend with the buyers who already showed up: developers and small teams running local inference, not headset early adopters waiting for AAA spatial games.

That does not mean Vision Pro engineers were wasted. It means Apple's 2026 AI story is deskside compute + Siri AI on devices people already own, not a $3,499 headset workflow.

We covered Apple's platform tensions before in the OpenAI trade secrets fight and in posts about ChatGPT reading Mac memory. The layoffs add a human cost line to that strategy chart.

What I would watch as an applied AI builder

Near term (2026):

  • Siri AI beta quality on macOS 27 versus third-party agents (Claude Code, OpenClaw, Cursor Cloud).
  • Whether Apple exposes stable agent APIs or keeps intelligence inside first-party apps.
  • Mac mini lead times after the marketing spike (supply still matters).

Medium term (2027–2028):

  • Smart glasses launch scope (no immersive video is a feature cut, not a minor detail).
  • Vision Pro hardware refresh pricing and whether pro studios return.
  • Ternus-era org stability after two waves of Vision/Siri cuts.

If your roadmap assumes Apple will host your agent with open hooks, hedge with portable harnesses and explicit data boundaries. If your roadmap assumes local agents on Apple silicon, the Mac mini refresh is the hardware signal that matches where Apple is spending message bandwidth.

Apple is not shrinking AI. It is reallocating AI toward silicon it can sell at scale and assistants it can brand. The layoffs are the receipt.

If you are navigating platform risk for agents on Apple hardware, book a free discovery call. Org chart moves are easier to plan for before your product depends on a deprecated team.
